Everything you need to know about EMUI 11

The EMUI 11 is OS in Huawei devices. The EMUI is Emotion UI, it is an android based custom user interface, developed by Huawei for its devices.

The first EMUI 1.0 was introduced on 30 Dec 2012 based on Andriod 2.2-4.2. After that, every year versions of EMUI or EMUI Series were updated based on different Andriod versions. On 10 September 2020, based on Andriod 10, Huawei officially unveiled EMUI 11 at Huawei Developer Conference 2020.

During its HDC opening keynote, Huawei stated that the EMUI 11 update would be rolling out to a group of ten smartphones and tablets in beta form from 10 September. With some Honor models following at a later date.

Always On Display:

One of the most visual changes in EMUI 11 includes the new artistic Always-on-Display (AOD). This new feature provides the user to customize their screen by using modern art, which is inspired by the work of the renowned painter Piet Mondrian.

The new AOD adopts a new primary color pallet of red, yellow, and blue. User can create their own color, match the AOD color with their outfit by capture a picture of the outfit, and AI algorithms will extract the color from the picture and generate a matching color palate for the user.

Updated animation:

It provides a new and smoother animation based on the new “human factor”. It improves the transition and UI interaction for better optimizations and also improved user experience

In addition to that, the animations are designed to pull your eyes to the right area of the screen. The new transition effects can be seen in some of the system apps like Calendar, Gallery, and video apps.


It is introduced in EMUI 10.1 and improved in EMUI 11. This is a new way to load your apps, and have them floating over your screen. You can send messages while playing games or watching videos.

The windows are resizable, and you can minimize them from a small floating button on the side of the screen. Also, you can drag and drop an app from the home screen to the edge panel from the side of the screen.

New live icons:

Huawei has updated to make them ‘Live Icons’ which means they have new animations when you tab them to select them and activate their features.

Huawei Share:

It is also introduced in EMUI 10.1 and now improved. It supports high-speed file transfer between two Huawei devices and also supports third-party sharing.

You can turn apps into floating windows on your laptop, drag and drop files from the phone to the laptop and even edit those files directly on the laptop.

Document Scanner:

Now Notepad app includes a scanner. So, point your camera on the document within the Notepad app, tap to ‘scan document’.

Super Notepad:

Notepad now supports editing notes simultaneously from multiple Huawei devices. Also, the user can now quickly copy, edit, export, and share the notes.

Security and Permission:

It comes with new improved security standards and privacy features. Encrypted memos also keep personal notes by securing the content with a PIN or biometric lock. Users can also check their complete history allowed permissio0n.

In addition to that, a new layer of privacy features for the consumers including the new notification icon that appears whenever a foreground app accesses your device’s location, storage, microphone, or camera.

AI Subtitles:

It is one of the newest features that were introduced in the EMU 11 and currently remain exclusive to the Chinese consumers. Also, users can browse articles or pictures in different languages and translate the words or paragraphs by selecting them.

Huawei device will get the EMUI 11 update

The current list of Huawei devices getting the EMUI 11 update only includes those phones that don’t have the full Google Android software and services. Essentially, just phones and tablets launched from late 2019 onward. The device list includes:

  • Huawei Mate 30
  • Huawei Mate 30 5G
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro
  • Porsche Design Huawei Mate 30 RS

  • Huawei Nova 7 (at a later date)
